A hidden gem in the Moselle Valley, this town has immaculate medieval landmarks, idyllic walking trails and a history stretching back to Roman times.

Wander through a maze of medieval streets in Cochem, a traditional town in the heart of a renowned wine-growing region. See centuries of history written in the old town’s architecture and the towering turrets of the castle as you wander along the riverfront promenade. Stop by local vineyards and pubs to sample the region’s fine Riesling and hike in nearby forests and meadows.

Get acquainted with the pretty streetscape of Cochem by walking along the Mosel Promenade. From here, you can see beautifully restored timbered houses with steeply pitched slate roofs, as well as charming riverboats on the water. See historic landmarks, such as the medieval Gate Tower and Guardhouse, or the magnificent 18th-century Baroque Town Hall. Wander into the town’s traditional marketplace to see traditional gabled houses and a pretty fountain. Purchase local produce, delicious treats and seasonal souvenirs from this marketplace, depending on the time of year.

Make your way up winding stone steps to the top of the Klosterberg hill, upon which you’ll find a cultural centre housed within a converted 17th-century monastery. Walk further up the steep hillside to reach the Reichsburg, Cochem’s castle. It is believed this intriguing structure was originally built in the 11th century. It was completely destroyed in 1689, but was rebuilt in the 19th century in its current Gothic Revival style. Catch the Sesselbahn chairlift from Cochem to the Pinnerkreuz and take in panoramic views of the riverside town and its presiding castle.

Cochem’s winegrowers and restauranteurs can introduce you to the region’s excellent Riesling wines. Go on a wine-tasting tour in the surrounding countryside or explore the region on a boat tour along the river. These tours are particularly captivating at night, when the bright lights of the town and hilltop castle can be seen reflected in the water.

Outside of the town, explore the Eifel and Hunsrück hiking trails and visit the ruins of Winneburg Castle in the Enderttal mountain ranges. Stay overnight in cosy guesthouses.

Cochem is located in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate region. Reach the town in less than 2 hours’ drive from both CologneOpens in a new window and FrankfurtOpens in a new window. Intercity trains connect to Cochem via Koblenz, the city where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet.

It’s a very pretty small German town but don’t expect lots of nightlife. Masses of eateries most serving German cuisine.
